Last Figures from RIM and Oracle

During the afternoon of June 25, two important technology companies from different sectors posted the results of the respective last quarters informing to Wall Street analysts about revenues and net incomes. For the quarter ended on May 29, Research In Motion reported revenue of $4.24 billion, just below the Wall Street consensus of $4.35 billion. The maker shipped 11.2 million smart phones in the quarter, and added 4.9 million net new subscriber accounts. Oracle announced fiscal 2010 four quarter with total revenues of $9.5 billion, up 39% compared year over year. According to the company the quarter was solid in results. White Oracle is going out of all the problems of the Sun Microsystems merger, Research In Motion suffers difficulties for the hard competition of iPhone and the smart-phones based on Android platform.

Toshiba announced that it is celebrating 25 years of innovation in the portable PC business with the launch of the libretto W100, the first dual touch-screen Windows mini-notebook PC of the world. It is also introducing other models of mobile computers. Originally, Toshiba introduced the first member of the family libretto in April 1996. Now, its new model was created a unique, pocket-sized companion, with distinctive dual 7.0-inch Wide LCDs that offer a display equivalent to a 10.0-inch wide screen. This computer runs Windows. The Japanese maker is now aiming for annual global shipments of 25 million units of mobile computers with innovative models that meet customer needs in both advanced and emerging market.

Acer Is Growing in Ambitions

Days ago, Wall Street posted an article written by Ting-I Tsai in Taipei (Taiwan) that said Acer is confident that it will accomplish its goal of becoming the No. 1 notebook vendor this year despite the economic crisis. The chairman of the PC maker, J.T. Wang thinks revenue in the third quarter will rise 10% to 15% from the second quarter. Also, the company of Taiwan expects personal computer shipments could rise as much as 50% this year. Till now, the leader of the sector is Hewlett-Packard but Acer is growing more than HP in the last quarters.

IBM announced it is delivering a beta version of Lotus Notes Traveler, a business-grade collaboration software for use with devices that run the Google Android operating system. Lotus Notes customers will synchronize information between Lotus Notes and mobile devices, including Droid, Nexus One and the other smart-phones running Android. Additionally, the next version of IBM Lotus Connections social software is planning to support the Android platform. According to a recent news report, approximately 100,0000 Android based phones are being activated each day.

The last news came from Nokia that lowed its sales forecast of the current quarter because it cans achieve its previous outlook. For the other side, Sony Ericsson continues walking across a route of frustration, and in recent months, also Research In Motion showed difficulties. Meanwhile, Apple informed it took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of the new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than it anticipated. But Apple also doesn't lose initiative in the computing segment. Two days ago it unveiled a completely redesigned Mac mini, featuring up to twice the graphics performance, a new HDMI port and a new SD card slot, all in an amazingly compact enclosure.

Like previous years, Los Angeles is celebrating a new forum of electronic games. From June 15 to 17, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, commonly known as E3 is holding in the Convention Center of this city of South California. The show for the computer and video games industry is organized by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA). At E3, Nintendo unveiled the 3DS, an handheld gaming systems which can play games in 3D without the use of special glasses. Sony announced a new motion-control system to plugs into a PlayStation 3. Microsoft presented Kinect, and add-on to the Xbox 360 which allows players to control games using only their bodies and voice commands.

ARM, IBM, Samsung Electronics, GlobalFoundries and Synopsis announced the delivery of the first complete vertically optimized 32/28 nanometer (nm) design platform. This group of companies is demonstrating the achievement at DAC 2010, in Anaheim, California from June 13 to 18. The solution consists of optimized high performance, low-power processor and physical IP from ARM, tool enablement, connectivity IP and integrated design flow from Synopys, and 32/28 nm low-power process technology from the Common Platform alliance of IBM, Samsung and GlobalFouundries. All the members of this alliance are important players of the semiconductor industry. For this reason the new common platform is an important contribution of the technological world.

IDC published its studies about the evolution of the hardware and software storage markets during the first quarter 2010. Worldwide external disk storage systems factory revenues posted year-over-year growth of 17.1% totaling $5.0 billion.
Also for the quarter, the total disk storage systems market grew to $6.7 billion in revenues, representing 18.8% growth from the prior year?s first quarter. According to IDC, the worldwide storage software market experienced solid growth in the first quarter of 2010 with revenues of $3.0 billion, representing 7.2% growth over the same quarter one year ago.

Steve Jobs showed iPhone 4, the thinnest version of the popular smart-phone with a front-facing 5 megapixel camera and sharper style. The new device includes over 100 new features, 1500 new APIs for developers, running iOS 4 with multitasking, folders, enhanced mail, and more advances. Also in keynote session, the CEO and co-founder of Apple released Safari 5, the new version of web browser of the company that supports more than a dozen new HTML5 technologies, with a version for Macs and another for Windows. Additionally, Apple announced it will debut its iAd mobile advertising network on July 1 on iPhone and iPod touch devices running its iOS 4 software platform.

After an intense week of conferences and exhibitions, COMPUTEX 2010 made its own balance. The computer and technology forum of Taiwan closed its doors with the analysis of the activities between May 31 and June 5. According to the sources, COMPUTEX TAIPEI's 30th anniversary dazzled the trade with all-round records. During the 5 days, it welcomed more than 120,000 visitors in total from home and abroad to check out the latest products and technologies displayed in 4,498 booths used by 1,715 exhibitors. It received more than 35,000 international visitors from 169 countries. The top 5 countries for international buyers were those from the United States, Japan, China, Hong Kong, and South Korea. Among the products that drew the most interest of the representatives were: electronic readers, 3D monitors, notebooks, servers, and storage-related products.

During his keynote session, David Perlmutter, executive vice president and co-general manager of Intel Architecture Group, explained details of new products and discussed together with Acer CEO, Gianfranco Lance, how future Atom processor-based netbooks and tables from Acer, running the MeeGo software, will foster an open ecosystem of innovation.

Novell: Less Revenues, No Net Losses

Novell announced financial results for its second fiscal quarter ended on April 30, 2010. For the quarter, the software company reported net revenue of $204 million, when a year ago it posted $216 million. For the other side, it net income was $19.9 million. In the same period of 2009, it was $15.6 million. Novell sees revenue of $205 million to $210 million in the current quarter, below the average of $210 analysts have been expected. Despite the enterprises are hiring new software and the economy is recovering, Novell doesn't show signs of growth. Some observers expect a potential acquisition of the father of Netware.
