Chips: IBM Uses the Avalanche Effect

IBM Labs, from Yorktown Heights, New York, informed its scientists gave a significant step towards replacing electric signals that communicate via copper wires between computer chips with tiny silicon circuits that communicate using pulses of light.

The scientists built a device called nanophotonic avalanche photodetector that uses "avalanche effect" in Germanium, a material currently used in production of microprocessor chips.

Other companies like Intel and Luxtera are researching similar techniques to improve the communication among chips.

Luxtera is a young company that was honored by Technology Review like one of the top 50 innovative companies of today.

In summary, the use of the pulses of light in the chip communication will help to surpass current barriers in the semiconductor industry that are stopping the industry in its movement forward the future.

Los laboratorios de IBM, en Yorktown Heights, Nueva York, informaron que sus científicos han desarrollado un nuevo proceso de comunicación entre chips que remplaza las señales eléctricas de las comunicaciones cableadas en cobre por circuitos muy pequeños de silicio que transmiten impulsos de luz.

Para el nuevo proceso de comunicación entre chips, los científicos construyeron un dispositivo en silicio y germanio que permite comunicaciones más rápidas y con menor consumo de energía. Su nombre es "nanofotónico fotodetector avalancha".

A propósito, se ha usado el nombre "avalancha" en la denominación del nuevo dispositivo, pues según los científicos que han participado en el proyecto, el detector que ellos crearon usa el efecto avalancha en el germanio que es similar al efecto avalancha de la nieve cuando cae de una montaña al valle.

El anuncio del nuevo logro científico fue publicado en la revista científica Nature. No obstante ello, la propia IBM distribuyó una comunicación de prensa en la cual, el Dr. T.C. Chen, vicepresidente del Science and Technology de IBM Research dice que: "Esta invención trae una visión de la interconexión óptica de los chips mucho más cerca de la realidad".

De acuerdo con las fuentes informantes, el nuevo avance permite una gran paso en el manipulación de las propiedades ópticas y eléctricas en la escala de muy pocos átomos. Por lo general, hasta el presente, los científicos han encontrado mucha dificultades para manipular los impulsos de luz con medios convencionales pues éstos son débiles y el ruido los distorsiona. El nuevo dispositivo suprime los efectos del ruido en la comunicación óptica entre chips entre un 50 y 70%.

Corresponde aclarar que otras compañías también trabajan en facilitar la comunicación entre chips por medio de pulsos de luz. Entre ellas, se pueden mencionar a Intel, líder de la industria de semiconductores, y a Luxtera, una empresa muy joven, que días atrás fue elegida por la publicación técnica Technology Review como una de las 50 compañías de mayor innovación del mundo.

Luxtera fue fundada en el 2001 en Carlsbad, Califronia y ha desarrollado su propio método de comunicación entre chips usando una tecnología conocida como "silicon photonics" que permite construir complejos sistemas eléctrico-ópticos en procesos CMOS.

Volviendo sobre la noticia de este BRIEF ANALYSIS, IBM comentó que el presente logro es un paso más en una serie de avances recientes. En diciembre del 2006, sus científicos lograron codificar los pulsos ópticos. Luego, en el 2007, avanzaron en el desarrollo de un modulador eléctrico-óptico ultra-compacto de silicio. Y en el 2008 encausaron el tráfico de las comunicaciones ópticas en un chip.

Resumiendo, el anuncio de los laboratorios de Yorktown Heights no esta referido a productos, ni a tecnologías que ahora estén entrando en el mercado. No es una noticia ni de marketing, ni que directamente tiene implicancias en la distribución o comercialización de la tecnología de hoy. Por ello, algunos lectores, tal vez piensen pasarla por alto, y pocos medios de prensa van hacer referencia a ella. Sin embargo, su importancia es extrema, pues desde ya hace varios años, todos los que están en la industria, saben que con las tecnologías y materiales actuales se está en el límite de lo que se puede avanzar. Por ello, el trabajo de laboratorio es clave para dar nuevos saltos que lleven a superar barreras que si no se superan, estancarar la evolución tecnológica de los próximos años.

Desde CeBIT 2010, en Hannover, Alemania, Cisco introdujo una nueva arquitectura de comunicaciones de datos que denominó Cisco Secure Borderless Network. Esta arquitectura fue desarrollada en base a cuatro cuestiones críticas: los puntos finales móviles y fijos de comunicación de la empresas, Internet, el centro de cómputos, y las políticas que regulan las comunicaciones de las empresas. Su implementación implica una evolución importante en la seguridad de las redes de comunicaciones de las empresas.

Fuentes próximas a Apple dijeron que el iPad entrará oficialmente al mercado en los últimos días de marzo. Se estima que durante este mes se despacharán entre 600 mil y 700 mil dispositivos, y en abril probablemente más de 1 millón.

HP reveló que ha trabajado con la diseñadora de accesorios personales Vivienne Tam para producir un modelo de netbook denominado HP Mini 210 Vivienne Tam Edition que será presentado en la New York Fashion Week como una novedad de diseño en materia de dispositivos digitales. Es un pequeño computador de 2,7 libras y de menos de una pulgada de espesor. No es la primera vez que una empresa de tecnología se asocia con un diseñador de artefactos y objetos personales vinculados con el vestir y la moda. Nokia y otros han fabricado modelos especiales de teléfonos móviles como artículos de lujo para uso personal.

TECH WALL STREET

Los mercados de Nueva York volvieron a cerrar con resultados mixtos en la tercera jornada bursátil del mes de marzo. Algunos índices de Wall Street bajaron y otros subieron. Las variaciones de esos índices estuvieron en el rango +0,40% y -0,04%.

Al cierre del miércoles 3 de marzo, Dow Jones Industrials Average bajó 9,22 puntos, o sea 0,09% para cerrar en 10396,76. Nasdaq Composite resbaló 0,11 puntos, o sea menos de 0,01%, cerrando en 2280,68. S&P 500 se movió hacia arriba 0,04%, y NYSE ganó 0,40%.

En el sector de tecnología, Morgan Stanley High Tech bajó 0,07%, Philadelphia Semiconductor declinó 0,86%.

Las acciones estrellas del 2009 finalizaron el día con los siguientes resultas :
- Google ganó $4,26, o sea 0,79%, para cerrar en $545,32.
- Baidu declinó $1,86, o sea 0,38%, cerrando en $517,02.
- priceline.com bajó $5,52, o sea 2,29%, para cerrar en $235,82.
- Apple fue hacia arriba en $0,48 o sea 0,23%, cerrando en $209,33.

En el sector de chips y semiconductores, Applied Materials e Intel volvieron a bajar. Qualcomm cerró en territorio positivo.

En el sector de sistemas, computadores, almacenamiento y redes, IBM, HP, y EMC declinaron. El resto, Apple, Dell, y Cisco subieron. IBM cerró en $126,88. HP concluyó la sesión en $51,10.

En el sector de software, Adobe y Symantec finalizaron el día en alza. Microsoft cerró sin cambios. Oracle bajó.

En el sector de impresión e imagen, Lexmark declinó. Canon, Kodak, y Xerox subieron.

En el sector de servicios de Internet, como se vio más arriba, Google subió y Baidu bajó. Yahoo también cerró en territorio negativo.

En el sector de comercio electrónico, Amazon.com cerró en alza. EBay y priceline.com bajaron.

En el sector de telecomunicaciones, AT&T subió. Sprint Nextel y Verizon Communications finalizaron la jornada en territorio negativo.

1.- De 38 empresas representativas de diferentes sectores de la industria de tecnología e Internet, al cierre de los mercados de Nueva York, 20 cerraron en territorio positivo, 1 sin cambios, y 17 en territorio negativo.

2.- El mejor crecimiento del grupo fue el de Radio Shack (+5,84%), seguido por Nokia (+2,59%).

3.- La peor caída de todo el grupo fue la de Seagate (-6,57%).

4.- Bell Micro que recientemente volvió a cotizar en Wall Street, subió $0,04, o sea 0,90%, para cerrar en $4,45.

Also, the company of Taiwan expects personal computer shipments could rise as much as 50% this year. Till now, the leader of the sector is Hewlett-Packard but Acer is growing more than HP in the last quarters.
